Electrical insulation refers to materials designed to resist the flow of electric current between conductive components. In electric vehicles, these materials help keep electricity within its intended pathways, preventing unintended electrical contact and protecting sensitive systems.

EV insulation can take many forms, including electrical tapes, polymer films, insulating papers, flexible laminates, coatings, and custom die-cut components.

Electrical insulation is used throughout an EV, including:

Battery cells, modules, and pack assemblies
High-voltage busbars and electrical connections
Electric motor windings and stators
Inverters, converters, and other power electronics
Charging systems and high-voltage cables

Thermal insulation serves a related but different purpose. While electrical insulation restricts the flow of electric current, thermal barriers are designed to resist heat transfer. Certain materials, such as mica-based insulation, can provide both electrical insulation and thermal protection.

Together, these materials help manufacturers address several important challenges in electric vehicle design.
